Nominis podcast – episode 078: eCommerce logistics
In Nominis episode 078 we explore the rise of eCommerce logistics, the impact of increasing online orders, and how delivery services adapt to growing demand. Find about the challenges of labor shortages, shifting consumer preferences, and emerging trends in cross-border delivery.
In the new episode of Nominis podcast which we are producing in partnership with the Association of eCommerce Croatia, we spoke to Snježana Stanić, the regional head of marketing, communications, and the development of Out of Home networks and new services at the logistics company DPD Croatia. The topis of the episode were eCommerce logistics, what customers expect from package delivery, and how domestic delivery services have adapted to the growing demand in the market.
The conversation opened with a current topic concerning the sharp increase in package delivery volume due to the surge in online orders from domestic and, especially, foreign companies, such as Chinese firm Temu. Snježana highlighted the significant impact of Temu’s entry into the Croatian market through a mobile shopping app and the subsequent surge in orders by Croatian citizens, which affected both the eCommerce and courier delivery markets, not just in Croatia but across Europe.
“I believe we adapted very well, being agile and well-organized, and this trend has continued as we optimally adjust to market demands. The large influx of packages over the past two years has revealed another problem – a shortage of qualified labor due to high turnover among couriers, warehouse workers, and other staff,”
As an optimal solution for handling such a large number of packages, mainly smaller ones, Snježana sees delivery to parcel lockers, which would improve delivery success, as consumer preferences increasingly embrace this form of delivery.
Data from the annual E-shopper barometer also shows that the trend of Out of Home delivery is on the rise among end users, with 23% of regular e-shoppers preferring parcel lockers as an alternative pickup location, a significant increase of 16% from the previous year. She added that in 2022 and 2023, many European countries experienced a decline in eCommerce volumes, but this has not yet happened in Croatia, and there is still significant room for growth in the market.
They also touched on fraud in the online environment. Snježana noted an increase in fraud in various forms and agreed with Marcel that relevant ministries should work together with the business community to prevent such situations and educate citizens.
