Nominis podcast – episode 093: Can WooCommerce support a startup?

In Nominis episode 093, we talk about Crumbs, a Croatian startup built around food waste, lower meal prices, and WooCommerce as the base for a custom mobile application. Antonio Matušan, founder of Crumbs, shares how the platform grew from an MVP into an app with more than 100,000 users.

In the new episode of Nominis podcast which we are producing in partnership with the Association of eCommerce Croatia, Marcel Majsan spoke with Antonio Matušan, founder of Crumbs.

Crumbs allows users to buy surplus food from restaurants, bakeries, and stores at lower prices. The idea came from Antonio’s earlier experience with a webshop for ready-to-eat meals, where he saw how much food was being thrown away.

The platform was launched in September 2024 with the slogan “Budi heroj, spasi hranu”. Since then, around 50,000 packages have gone through the network, helping save around 20 tons of food.

Crumbs is currently active in Zagreb, Split, and several locations in Osijek, with plans to expand to Rijeka and other regional markets. Antonio explained that user growth came quickly, while onboarding partners was the bigger challenge because many businesses were unsure how the process would work.

WooCommerce gave Crumbs a practical way to test the idea before building a more complex system. The first version does not need to solve every future problem. It needs to prove that users want the product, partners understand the model, and the business can start learning from real transactions.

The episode also covers Crumbs’ participation in Infobip Startup Tribe, their win at Shift, the use of Stripe, Cloudflare, automation, WhatsApp and Viber plans, and the current investment process with a VC fund.

Antonio believes Crumbs should grow beyond a food waste platform and become an app for deals. The goal is to help partners gain visibility, bring customers into their locations, and offer users affordable food in a time when meal prices keep rising.

The episode ends with a clear startup message: start with the tools that let you move, validate the idea in the market, and improve the system as real usage grows.
